Lochter Report – Marching into March at Lochter
Down Lochter way as we wave a fond farewell to a meeker than normal February they say that March is a no man’s land between Winter and Spring and it can either resonate between hope and frustration as well as being either tempestuous or teasing.
Now a bit of frustratingly tempestuous hopeful teasing isn’t as bad as it sounds as we all survived being teenagers after all when ‘being woke’ was something your Mum did so you weren’t late for school. So us fishers are made of sterner stuff and a merry band of them made their way down to Lochter to hone their skills against our home grown Lochter trout which are now in peak condition.
An array of bendingly expensive rods were seen around the lochs and breaking strains of lines were seriously tested and sometimes sadly exceeded and broken with the foot stamp and heavenly look above the quiet and only sign that a fish with an exceedingly small brain had out foxed you.
Happily, losing a fish was a rarer occurrence as the week progressed as the anglers came to terms with the exacting demands that a fully finned fighting Lochter trout expects from you.
Those who met these heady demands had some terrific sport and Barry Morgan up from Dundee had well over 20 fish using small nymphs and apps bloodworms.Others in the 20 plus categopry were the continually resurgent Fred McCally from Aberdeen who stuck with mainly a variety of his own home tied apps bloodworms, Lewis Ross used either olive nymphs, tadpoles and orange cormorants and Paul Ingram stuck with his favourite team of cormorants with the odd buzzer sometimes attached.
Kevin Morrison stuck with his favourite hothead dancer lure for 16 fish, Jim Gilmour had his 14 fish on a damsel or red apps and on 12 fish were Bill Bain using a yellow dancer,Ernie Mackay on small nymphs and Albert Trail on the classic buzzer and cormorant combination.Hotly behind on 11 fish were Eric Dickie on the bloodworm, Rob Wishart on the cormorant and vicar buzzer and George Pirie on the okay dokay.
Stuart Howie had 10 fish on buzzers and nymphs,Thomas Wishart had 10 on the black bunny leech, J Donn had 9 on lures, Davy Menzies had 9 on mops and Callum Stewart had 8 fish on the Montana and WSW lures.Other flies that worked well during the week were the beaded diawl bach, dennis the menace buzzer, hothead damsel and the gemstone cormorant.
As March arrives they say that it is the month of ‘Summer in the light and Winter in the shade’ so for the month ahead lets hope you at least get the choice.
