The other pheasant tail. Cove's PT uses simple materials to make a strong profile, the slim curving body and bulging thorax simply looks like a buzzer pupa.
Arthur Cove tied these in large sizes, on some very large long-shank hooks. I've used a typical wet fly hook.
Fishes brilliantly as a buzzer.
Hook: Size 10 wet fly hook
Thread: Black
Rib: Copper wire
Body: Natural cock pheasant tail
Thorax: Hare or rabbit or squirrel dubbing
Thorax cover: Pheasant tail
Size 10 wet fly hook in the vice. Attach thread and catch in a length of copper wire.
Wrap the thread to the bend of the hook, keeping the wire under the shank all the way. Tie in a slim bunch of pheasant tail fibres.
Wrap the pheasant fibre bundle in butting turns to the thorax. Wrap the wire rib forwards in open turns.
Break off the wire and trim off the feather butts.
Place a large bunch of PT fibres on top of the shank and bind down.
Trim off the butts.
Dub the thorax area,
Pull the PT fibres over to the eye, hold them tight and bind them down.
Trim off the PT butts and cover the stubs with thread. Whip finish and varnish the head.
