Down Lochter way last week there was the odd pervading thought of sadness that Summer had now passed but the more optimistic reflected that Autumn should be thought more of as a ‘Second Spring’ when “ every coloured leaf is a flower “.
Whatever your thoughts one good thing about it is that it is one of the best times to be out Stillwater fly fishing, as the fish are actively feeding, its not too cold on the hands and the fish are up for a fight.
This was certainly reflected in the returns book with many favourably comments about the fighting quality of our home grown troot.
Jim Brown had a couple of sessions during the week when he caught 20+ fish on fabs,buzzers and lures.Also in this category were Jonathan Petrie who mainly used a pink wotsit, Graeme Gauld on buzzers, Albert Trail on a yellow mop, James Abel on flies only known to himself, Dave McLaren on a fab and diawl bach combination, Colin Leslie who stuck mainly to assorted cormorants and Albert Cowie on buzzers and apps bloodworm.
Fred McCally changed between mops,apps bloodworms and the mojito for his 18 fish, Paul Antipolo stuck with a fab and cormorant combination for his 17 fish , Frank Sangster used buzzers and small nymphs for his 15 fish and Dave Caldwell had 14 fish on a yellow dancer and cats whisker.
A Tweedie fished an assortment of diawl bachs for his 12 fish, R Wishart solely used cormorants for his 11 fish , Peter Selkirk used either buzzers,diawl bachs or black lures for 11 fish and Bart Laurenson used the ever popular fab and buzzer combination for his 10 fish.
Other flies that did well during the week were the blue damsel,Rob Roy lure, pink bunny leech and the Dennis the Menace buzzer
We are currently open from 8am – 5pm so plenty time for some reflective fishing fun.
