Lochter Report - It's 'Ace' at Lochter
« on: 01/03/2022 at 13:17 »
Down Lochter way last week an old original rainbow fly made a bit of a comeback to show these new fangled shiny, wobbly stuff that there is still a place for a bit of tradition.

Yes it was the ‘ace of spades’ fly which seemed to come into its own in the continuing windy conditions of last week.

Tommy Anderson led the way with this fly, getting 17 fish for his session.

Word then spread of its success and Doug Watson found one forlornly lurking at the back of his fly box and it didn’t let him down as he had 12 fish to the net and Al Birnie also used it for a very respectable 10 fish.

Although conditions were not ideal due to the blustery winds it didn’t seem to put the fish off the feed and some encouraging returns were put in.

Graham Duthie said he used “everything” on his arsenal of flies including cormorants, buzzers and lures and it got him 21 fish to the net. John Lewis also made a good show of things with 21 fish also, this time on snakes.

Mike Jack used mainly the green fritz for his 18 fish, which included a lovely 12lb specimen.

Jim Brown had 2 sessions netting 17 and 10 fish respectively and used mainly buzzers and apps, Ali Fryer from Inverness did well with a black buzzer with an orange head in tandem with plain black cormorants for his 17 fish and John Fraser also had 17 on cormorants and the infamous ‘Ron Special’.

Brian Ross stuck to a team of sparse spiders, which got him 8 fish; Ken Morrice also had 8 on pearly cormorants and okay dokays and Jim Gilmore had 7 on lures and buzzers.

There were plenty returns in the favourite 4-6 category, so things are still ticking away nicely for this time of year.

Speaking of old flies:- there must be a ‘VIVA’ lying about in boxes somewhere. Give it a go!

Tight lines,

S.P 1/3/22.
