Instructors?
« on: 10/02/2008 at 11:04 »
Hi does anyone know of any local instructors (im in pitmedden) i contacted Paul (grhe) back in October but he no longer gives instruction  :cry

I'm not doing too well in the catching stake either i rekon i must be doing something wrong so thought it might be good to have a proper lesson and let someone point out what im doing wrong.

Hi Dave

I recommend 2 instructors. Willie Banks, who is a casting and angling instructor for both trout and salmon and Mike Donald who specialises in salmon. I have worked with both and both are excellent.

Hope this helps

Hi Dave,

How long do the lessons last for the £30?
How far in advance do you have to book is a week far enough or has it to be longer?

 hi dave
it is hard going just now but wait till the sumer time you will get a lot more fish .
the fishing are not feeding much this time of year and in the sumer you see fish feeding of the top (dry fly time is the best time of the year !!) give it a mouth or 2 and the fishing will be better.

yep it might be the case of me trying to run before i can walk, also i need to sort out my fishing depth i think i've been fishing too deep. I've been counting to 10,20 ect but i think maybe i need to count faster as when i think about it the fly sinks prity fast so i'm prob fishing on the bottom or very close to it.

There are some things that are totally unexplainable in fly fishing as some of the previous answers have alluded to. Even when you are totally technically proficient there will be days when you just won't catch , its like a bad day at the office , these things just happen sometimes.

Just keep at it , its a bit like serving an apprenticeship , things will just click into place. Its like Gary Player said , "the more I practice the luckier I get"

One thing with flyfishing though you never stop learning  :z13

Yes i know its all down to luck at the end of the day and maybe i'm being to hard on myself, you just get a bit disheartend when 3 out of the last 4 outings you dont even get a knock let alone catch anything (cue for mike to post the pic for the 1 out of 4 outings). But i'm not going to give up just keep on pluggin away.

No its not really down to luck at the end of the day , When Gary Player said that it was in response to a journalist who called him a lucky barsteward for holing out from a bunker. He was being ironic , he holed the shot because he practised , not because he was lucky.

What I meant is even when you have all the skill and most of the knowledge , you can still blank, but the more you practice the less likely it is to happen.

To keep the golf analogy you  would not expect to take up golf and hit rounds of 72 in a couple of weeks , as you said yourself just keep plugging away.
