Down Lochter way last week we had a steady stream of holiday visitors eager to cast a fly on a new water to them. It is always interesting to find out what methods are practiced in different parts of the country.
Rob Devlin from Ayrshire was a case in point as he only seemed to use hothead damsels and other lures.
When asked the most effective one he said with a straight face:- “Definitely the Fred Flintstone lure,”
When asked, “Why’s that?” he replied “Yabba Dabba Doo I’ve got 22” and burst out laughing.
He had obviously been waiting for the right moment to say this for some time. Even more intriguing his wife is called Wilma.
Other less mirthful ambassadors were Steven Robertson from Dumfries who fished all 3 lochs, washing line styled with a fab on the point and either buzzers or diawl bachs on the doppers and they proved very effective giving him 18 fish to the net.
Paul Hopkins from Perth came out for an evening session and he did a bit of klink and dinking and in his 3 hours he had 12 fish from the Muckle Troot.
Nearer to home, our regular customers continued to do well in some difficult hot and sunny conditions.
Albert Cowie from Fraserburgh continued using very small black buzzers and he had no trouble getting over 20 fish to the net.
Jim Whyte had 2 outings and on one he had 18 fish on a variety of buzzers and one the other occasion he got 12 fish on a fab.
Charlie Will fished later afternoon into evening and was on top of the water with dry flies and he was very happy with his 17 fish.
Johnny Thackery had 2 sessions where he had 16 and 14 fish and buzzers and small nymphs were his flies of choice.
Brian Ross continued to enjoy his evening sessions and he was most content with 10 fish all caught on the dry fly.
With the school holidays started our bait ponds have been very busy and the gleeful sound of children catching fish has been most welcome to see and hear.
