Fishing The Fly Scotland Forum

Howard & Stuart

Down Lochter way the week culminated with the Troutmaster Fish Off on Sunday with a biting Siberian wind to content with for those hardy competitors who attended the event.

Competition was very keen right up to the final whistle and when the score cards were tallied up it was found that Matthew Will and Charlie McPhee were tied on 10 points, with Matthew getting the nod as winner on the count back system where the best performer at the 1st peg or subsequent pegs is taken into account. So well done to Matthew who will represent Lochter at the Troutmaster Final at Draycote fishery on the 8th of October.

A special mention also goes to Jasmine McPhee who qualified for the junior Troutmaster Final to be held at Thrunton Long Crag Fishery on the 21st and 22nd of July. We wish them both the best of luck for their future efforts.  During the week some encouraging returns were recorded for the fishery in the difficult and cold conditions that prevailed.

Pete Green from Huntly had 14 fish to the net on either bloodworm or bunny leeches, Bill Reid from Newmachar did well on his first outing of the year landing 12 fish one being a nice plump 8 lb fish returned to fight another day.

Special mention goes to the Frigate Pub Angling Section who bravely had an outing on Saturday and their two top performers were Colin MacDonald with 9 fish on buzzers, his biggest fish being 8 lb and Mike Frost who tempted 8 fish to his net the biggest being 5 lb, all mostly on a WSW lure.

Other notable returns for the conditions were Steve Argo and S Williams both with 9 fish using the WSW, J Campbell had 8 fish, one being a 7lber, all on a gold beaded green fritz. P Elrick had 7 fish on a green WSW and Rod Palmer had 6 fish, which included a 3lb brownie, all taken on a team of cormorants.

Names have been coming in thick and fast for our next competition, which is the Spring Singles on Sunday the 8th of April, with a 9.30am start. There are still places available, but to avoid disappointment secure your entry by calling the bothy on 01651 872787. It is a fun and friendly event with some nice prizes. Entry fee is £20 and lunch is included.
