My God a reply to one of my tutorials on the Fishing the Fly website, i'll finish this reply once I've picked myself off the floor and managed to use the smelling salts to clear my head.
I've much easier ways of tying this but wanted to show how I tie them when rapid decent to depth / fast water situations are required.
I also tie them like this because:
melting and shaping the ends helps make the 'fly' appear more 'natural', but in truth it sets up better if you're going to colour the tips as I do.
Colour the tips because it looks more like a brandling worm and the varnish helps protect the colour, but also has added advantage of making the ends slightly heavier and able to catch the current better (making the fly a lot more mobile in the water).
And yes I have caught on it in a big dirty water when everything else wasn't working which is about the only time I'd probably use this pattern (this and when competing).
As you know if it's no a Dirty Duster or DHE then it's nae use tae me
