Baitfish fly

Gents,

while I have spent years trying to make skinny little flies for trout in Scotland, things are a little bit different here in the UAE. I am now making things on 3/0 hooks with 10 to 11 inch long pieces of EP fibres. Looking forward to chucking these in the sea this weekend. This is different but may be useful when I move home in a few years for Pike fishing, I know Rob has made many of these but this was my first attempt last night.

All the best,

Eddie. :z18

Looks good to me :) Have fun chucking it at the sea!!

Have a bash with Steve Farrar SF Blend. Its like EP but slightly crinkled and has a bit of flash through it. Tends to give more volume and hold its shape a bit better than EP. I don't use much EP these days after finding this stuff.

For even more flash try Flash n' Slinky also from H2O

Rob,

thanks for that. The white bit on the bottom is EP and the green and blue stuff is SF and you are right the SF is easier to work with. I will give them a swim on Saturday so hopefully I can find some willing participants.

What would you suggest using if I wanted to put some barring on these?

Thanks,

Eddie. :z18

Some scaled down versions of these would be handy for the Peacock Bass here.

I'll take 2 dozen tied on size 4 or 6's. If you can arrange to have them completed and brought over to Stonehaven at Xmas that would be highly appreciated  :z7

To save you carrying yours with you when you come to visit! The same reason I bought you the Marco Polo. We can't allow for any of your excuses to stop production.

I use permanent marker pens.

Get a thin bit of cardboard and cut out thin triangular bits and use these as a template. Just brush the fly out, lay the template over the top and dab with the pen.

Once finished, stroke the top of the fly with the pen to get a darker back.

Another way, which worked really well for some "Parr" flies I tied was to use brown and yellow EP or SF and lay it along the side, starting with brown, then shorter yellow, shorter brown etc and you get nice "thumb prints" along the fly. First tie the basic shape and colour of the fly as normal, but dress a little on the light side. Then lay the colours down the flanks. You need to tie it very flat and trim straight then taper with tapering scissors. Hard to explain but I will see if I have some photos.

Rob,

apologies for the gesticulation. I thought that the comment on Peacock Bass was from number one son.
