Troot Activity

Any signs of troot or fly activity yet?
Bloody weather's put the dampeners on my long awaited early season bash, but i bet something's happening out there?

The warm spell we had in Feb had a few flies hatching and troots moving, so here's hoping it all comes good again soon.

Cheers

Agree Allan,

Not seen anything move on the Don, there were trout taking flies at end of Feb on the Dee.  Not seen much in the way of fly life yet on the Don.  Couple of small stones and some midge.

Cheers

Yup out for a wee wander without the rod yesterday and all i noted were some small stones.  At least the flybox should be pretty full by the time the weather eventually settles.

I was down the Don this afternoon for a few casts.
More of a recce for next week.
Plenty small stoneflies and tiny grey and black buzzers coming off all afternoon.
About 1.30 the large dark olives started and trickled off until almost 3.
It was a fairly steady hatch but not a fish to be seen.
No sign of any olive uprights or march browns, just the LDO's.
Would be a good indicator perhaps that my thoughts about everything being about 2-3weeks behind could be fairly close to the mark.
The water is very cold but clear and quite low. Never saw a salmon and talking to the few people I met, neither had anyone else. I had hoped conditions were pretty good, still it was a beautiful afternoon to be on the river :z18
I took some photos of the flies to accuratley identify them at home so I will try to post a couple tomorrow :z16

Some bugs from yesterday.

Large dark olive

A close up of the hindwing i used for identification.

The small Midge

And what i make a Small Brown Stonefly of the Nemouridae Family.

All the ID's were done using the close up photos, General size and the information in the FSC Insect guides.  Hopefully they are all good.
It certainley gives you an idea for the colours of the flies. If anyone can add to the ID's please do so :z16

Great to see those bad boys again  :z16

Is that a compact camera Sandy? If so has it a Super Macro facility?

Iain

They are taken with my Canon D10 that lives in my Fishing jacket.
Just an ordinary Macro facility, but it is waterproof  :z16
The light yesterday was rather nice and as you know that helps no end.

I was in the river catching bugs when i suppose i should have been trying to fish for salmon :roll Still it was more fun.

FYI the olives and stones were about a 14 and the midge about an 18.

The other buzzer i saw was this one

It was about a 22

Cool

I still love the super macro mode on my fishing camera as you know it can be the difference between finding a spur on a hindwing....or not.

Like the micro midge shot.

Many's a time I've dropped the double hander in favour of bug hunting  :z16 they're only Salmon after all  :z8  :z4

I actually find it's more use as a means of catching bugs at distance, than an angling implement :z16

Like having a 15ft bandy net :z7

After a long morning digging the garden i finally found my way to the Gate :z18

Now i didn't see anything rise, BUT.......................................

Guess who........Hurrah :z16 :z16 :z16

Now this was on the Ythan, but if they are hatching on the Ythan then they must be doing so on the Don.
I didn't go down till after 2 but the hatch was a steady trickle till 4 :z16

Some LDO's coming off too.

Looks like things are slowly coming to life in the NE

I chased the little bugger all over the reel, he didn't want to sit still. :z16
It took me an hour to get one in the first place :shock

The LDO was a bit different, none of my pictures showed the spur and with the Brick coloured eyes and yellowish tail end it made me wonder if it was a Dark Olive, but they don't have a history of being in Scotland. Either way its a male because of the Eyes and Tail, i think we can safely assume the spur is there :wink

Looks more like an olive upright rather than a LDO to me Sandy but could be wrong.
