I think he was fishing from the bank Lindsay  :X2

Well, you never know Iain - I recall one Forum member accussing another Forum member of "walking on water" quite recently.

Ok, a 'mid beat' on the Don if we is getting all symantic-itical-ish !  :z4

Lindsay it was a middle beat and the harrrrrrr was coming and going. I just headed to a pool where I usually see some fish rising and stayed there.  Arrived at 9 and a few were rising had died by 10 and saw hardly any more rises even though I stayed until about 11. Was a lot of fly life, sedges and clouds of spinners. I suspect the spinners would be quiet localised. Water was quiet coloured and lots of annoying weed coming down.

Cheers Noel. Quite mild and muggy in Aberdeen today, might be okay tonight. Will definitely be out tomorrow night assuming no more rain before then !  :roll

Managed out on the Don for an hour after work today, about 3:30pm. (really need to find more time to fish)
Water was looking quite clear but still some debris floating down the river, althought nothing major.
Maybe still a little on the high side but that didnt seem to bother the trout as there was a few seen rising.

Lots of fly life visible, sedge and wee olive things. :z4
Decided to fish a size 14 olive DHE that i had tied the day before. Managed to tempt one 10"-12" broonie, first don brownie on the dry. Pretty chuffed as i never fish dries on the river. Can see why some guys only fish dries.

Dan The Man, well done ! Told you that fly would do ythe biz  :wink

Strictly speaking a DHE would be an "emerger" according to some folks but good enough for me as a dry !

Was out also last night, calm warm and muggy, not much happening until about 21:30 and noticed a big fish feeding just below the surface. chucked all i had at him and nothing  :z19. On walk back to the car i spotted another slightly smaller fish feeding regularly mid river, put on an f-fly but due to fading light missed the take  :mad.
Ah well, good fun anyway and i'll be back for the big fella another night. 22:30 the fog turned heavy so packed up.

Well done on your fish Dan  :z16, i also tried tying my first ever klinkhammer and tried it last night and apparently i have made a wet version  :shock

Hey i am planning to go fishing on the don up by Alford early next month and i was just wondering if anyone has any tips for the beats up there and any general river fishing tips as I have very little experience on rivers especially fly fishing? :z8

much appreciated.

Out last night above Grandholme bridge with a 12 and a half footer and a collection of small tubes.

Visibility was about 18" and the river was holding steady in the rain.

I should have stayed at home as I have twisted my back quite badly, probably my poor spey casting :(

I had one fish, a 10" trout that took a 1" copper thing made of orange, yellow and black hair. Munro Killer varient perhaps?

Has anyone had a look at the river today?
I have a free pass on Saturday and was hoping to get some Salmon fishing done. The river levels online have it dropping nicely but not sure if the water will be clear or not.

cheers,

Still pushing hard and quite big but clear enough to fish, slight stain but not too bad.

Managed to sneak away for a few hours yesterday afternoon halfway along the Balbithan and Torryburn Beat.

Despite the water levels still being higher than normal, starting to run a little clearer and after finding a nice deep pool not far downstream from a burn that flows into the Don, saw a lot of reasonable size fish rising for a hatch.

Lots of fish rising but only the one for the net on a #12 CDC & Elk (approx. 1.5 lbs) - THANKS YOUNG GUN !!  Tips, advice, tapered leader and flies all really helped.  Hope to meet up with you next week now you're back and before we lose you altogether.

Tips I've learnt from some our our forum mates - cast to rising fish and match the hatch - all came together yesterday - made a nice change from the 2 inch tiddlers that seem to plague my fishing !

Here's to the water levels dropping and the sun making a welcome re-appearance.

Tightlines all.

That sounds ominous for Young Gun ? Nice fish TTF, and good fly !

Will be oot masell the night given that fish plus Ben's assessment - tomorrow looked like best bet but Sarah-triplebarrell-name weather girl on BBC has now predicted it will pish doon right over us tomorrow ! Ah well she's sometimes gets it well wrong.

Great trout Tim! :z16
Also sorry to hear you will be leaving soon Liam, will have to get along to your patch before you go.

Manged out this afternoon to try a few shooting heads on my 8/9wt salmon rod (none of which felt right :X1)
So decided to to have a bash for some trout instead. Having spoken to Goolager a week or so ago i decided to heed his wise words and put in some miles to find some brownies that were on the feed and constantly rising rather that covering "oncers"

Wise words indeed as i was rewarded with my best river brownie yet, about 18" long and a bit on the tubby side. Absolutly smashed my DHE on the third cast. Not sure what weight it would have been, would have been interesting to weigh it. (i am useless at weights)

Was hoping to get back out again tonight but have been given a hundred and one things to do instead.
Which is a shame as i was hoping to pick your brains for hints and tips Lindsay. :wink
