I've been out the past couple of days also. Friday was good with 9 fish ranging from 1/2lb to 1lb all on the CDC and Elk. I was out last night for a couple of hours from 8.00 - 10.30pm. Some great big fish rising to upwings and sedges, I managed 2 of around 1 1/2 lbs and lost another which was fractionally bigger. All fish were taken on a size 14 CDC and Elk.  :z16

Nice fish Phil, from my homestretch of water too eh?  :z16

I had my first River Fishing session yesterday, looking at the pictures above i'm clearly doing something wrong  :cry, caught plenty of 1/2 - 3/4 lb Brownies but nothing to ride home about.

Any information on fly selection etc, would be much appreciated as i'm on a bit of a steep learning curve.

Well done guys, good to see and hear of some good catches.

Alan if you had plenty of 1/2 and 3/4 lbrs on your first attempt then you are not doing much wrong :z16

In general most of my bigger fish have been rising and caught on drys. But looking at the pics above one on a streamer, one on a wet so all tactics work at the right time. Being in the right place at the right time is half the battle. For fly selection have a read back through this thread. Loads of info there.

I decided to cycle down to the river tonight. Headed down for nine and checked out a few of my favourite spots. Hardly anything showing until about 10pm when a few sporadic rises started to appear here and there. Then as the bats began their nightly hunt the big boys made their appearance, there were some HUGE fish!! I tracked a few sedges on the surface and just watched the big heads appear as they were slurped. I know where I'll be heading tomorrow night  :wink

Now that I've got a 3lb+ Brown under my belt as of last night :z14 I've decided to try and target Sea Trout. Can anyone help me with tactics, flies, best times to fish for them?  :z16

Cheers

nice work liam. was that using the battenkill reel?

Give me a shout next time you are down my end of the river, and i'll show you a couple of pools/places where sea trout might be found. That said, if you keep on fishing the way you are fishing now, you'll be sure to hook a sea trout on the dry too, cool!

cheers

Yesterday night had a cast with young gun (Liam) after arriving and seeing b***er all for the first couple hours it turned in to an amazing night  :z16.

Liam was the first off the block when he klinked and dinked up a run

The man in action

The result a stunning 2.25lber

The Trophy Shot

5mins after this he then hooked into a belter of a fish probably around the 4lb mark which he had on for a good while.  Unfortunatly the fish got well downstream and eventually the hook pooped out.  Was gutted  :cry

After seeing this decided i should have a go it wasnt long until i had my spirts lifted when fishing about 30 feet upstream i got a nice fish around a 1.25lb then just as we were about to move i cast at what i thought was a small fish turned out to be this one.

Just over 4lb and 22inches long

Trophy Shot

The fish took a pecock hearl body size 12 elk hair caddis.

After that fish i was chuft with my night so we went on the hunt for a big fish for Liam we found a monster :shock
Who Liam managed to rise 5 times and never once did he make contact was as exciting as fly fishing gets.

All in all a great night shame about Liam losing his PB but theres always next time and there were plenty big boys going about roll on next time.
