My 8th night in a row on the don proved to be pretty interesting was the mildest evening out of them even the midges were out unfortunatly, only 4 more nights till the wifes back :cry.  From 1030 to 1230 there were fish everywhere best rise ive seen this year so far. Fished over a big fish for over an hour finally got him to take only to miss him then called it quits as it was pitch black.
Around 9 oclock was the best bit of my night i saw a rise from a fish ive been targeting the past three nights guess about 2-3lb anyway cast and and up came a fish unfortunatly wasnt him, it jumped out the water saw it was around 8-9inches so played it halfway in then gave it a bit of slack hoping it would through the hook till i got my forceps.  Then when i had them in my hand and was going to take the fish in thought it must have went round a rock as couldnt budge it.  Then it started going away and putting a serious bend in the rod.  After a while i saw what happened a fish 3-4lb had the 8incer half sticking out its mouth :shock.  You coulld see the fish in the clear water had it on for a good while before it managed to dislodge the fish it had eaten head first.

Heres a pitcure of the half chewed on trout a big mouthfull, it was pretty beat up and shell shocked when it went back

You're putting serious hrs Michael lucky bugger! Thought it was 2 foggy last night and that it would get dark early so didn't bother. Wish I had now. Was the river rising at all?
So 8/9 inch streamers could be the way forward!

Ah ok that makes more sense. Was also out tue night with goo and had a few 3/4 lbrs. Goo had quiet a few up to 1.75lbs. Seen a huge trout moving but no joy.
River is up a foot today, hopefully not 2 coloured. Anyone seen the water today?

Can't see the picture at work Mikhail but looking forward to it when I get home.

Pity about the weather last night as the two previous were very good, nothing too big but lots of nice fish on the dry.

Best & worst time of the year, lots of late nights and early mornings for work so capitalised last evening with a 7:30 beddy bye time - god it's crud getting old.  :z5.

Sea-Trout obviously in the system, as Ian, Skidzer & Dan have mentioned, so hopefully a few will be with us now.

Noel, I just want to take this opportunity to say it's a pleasure to fish with and learn from you, although you are slightly boring.  :X2  :z4

I'm assuming by learning from me you mean learning from my mistakes! Eg don't spend 20 mins trying to change fly in the dark during the best rise of the night! Or maybe you mean learning the location of MY big fish...will be having another go at him tonight of you wanna come along. Bring your camera  :z4

Worth heading out tonight guys? I would imagine its up and coloured quite a bit? What have the evening hatches been like?

If the above indicate a trip out is worth while where should I try to fish?  :z16

Cheers

Hi Liam,

High & brown today Liam, tomorrow could be O.K but I think we are forecast more rain overnight.  Island at top of Balbithan was submerged this morning at 8AM so thats up at least 2'.

#4 WB may be worth a shot if there is more than about 18" visibility.

Cheers

what happened a fish 3-4lb had the 8incer half sticking out its mouth

that's a pretty cool report; unusual, don't hear it happening too often to trout fly fishers?
Tie up some 8inch brownie streamers then?

cheers

Was out for a few hours today, water still a bit coloured but clearing. Caught a few small trout and hooked into a decent fish also but lost it. I'll return for him another day if the cows in the field allow me after a young bull gave chase much to my embarrassment, second time this has happened to me. Guess I have bad cow etiquette :)

What a big browni!!! Beautiful fish  :z16

Fished yesterday on the Don, from 11 till 6pm. When I arrived it was not too windy and some trouts have been feeding on the surface, managed to catch 2 small brownies on the dry fly. Then the wind picked up and I changed to a march brown wet fly...
Suddenly a strike and bend in the rod!!! I though this must be a big one and a second later it jumped and pulled line of the reel. Finally a fish that is bigger than my hand...  :grin :grin :grin

This was my first Don Sea Trout, probably not a monster, but a amazing fish and good fun on the 5wt... I didn't weigth it or meassure it. It took him 20 second to recover, then took of with a big splash and headed upstream...

Can't wait to go out again!

Phil
