Need Ceramics
« on: 06/02/2012 at 16:28 »
Hi Guys,

I've been getting really frustrated recently with my tying!! My flippin thread keeps fraying or snapping :mad :mad only happens when using 12/0 (which is all the time) I haven't finished a decent fly in days because of it  :cry :cry. Im not sure if it's just my style of tying or if it's just that my bobbins are shite :z8 :z8.

Bottom line is I have decided to invest in a ceramic bobbin :z14 hopefully I so t have any problems with them. As a newbie to tying I'm pretty clueless, could some of you guys recommend a pair of ceramics?

Cheers
Liam

Tiemco...........I've used one for nearly 15 years and never cut a thread because of it. Now have 2 and would happily buy another.

I use the Tiemco ones and they've never let me down. I used to have a shed load of steel tubed ones but most have been junked and the best ones are used for floss and the like.

I have one veniards ceramic one and it's never let me down either but as said I like my Tiemco ones.

Hi Liam,

Sounds like a sharp edge somewhere or dodgy thread ? I use Gordon Giffiths Sheer Thread ( which is 12/0 ?) and have had no problems with it using a Dr.Slick 4 inch Ceramic http://www.lathkill.com/shop/index.php?productID=4245. They are basic but okay - good for tension with Pearsalls too.

Hi Liam,

Did that rolled tube bobbin holder not solve the problem?

Veniard ones are O.K, last one I got did cut thread straight out of the pack.  Get a Tiemco and don't drop it on a hard floor.  Expensive but will last almost forever.

Cheers Iain, wisnae sure. It is definitely very very strong for that 'thiness' ! There is also a 8/0 'Wisp' for those who are not wanting 14/0  - http://www.flytyingboutique.com/store/Details.asp?ProdID=122&category=9 . Would probably give Nanoweb a run for its money !

Thanks for that folks  :z16

I'm thinking on getting the Tiemco's with an amazon voucher I have left over from christmas, finally found a use for it  :z14

Ben that flared ones didn't seem to stop the problem  :z8

It could possibly be the thread or perhaps it's just me :cry

no need to fret Lindsay if you beat yourself up about it you might throw yourself off a bridge & damage your nut. So hammer on and get yourself to the bar for a pick me up but don't have too much beer or you might want to rif-t and wake up in the morning with a hangover and the tremolos. Right I'm off for a minor rest, as I'm half beat, before fixing my car which has A flat tyre.

Brilliant !  :z4 Just relieved there was nothing in there about having to go away and practise my "pull-offs" !
