Ended up in a salty part of the Don yesterday evening from high tide to low. Lots of weed about but there was an interesting "deviation" in the river close to the sea where I found big shoals of baitfish exploding on the surface. On with a sandeel pattern but nothing! I had one large fish come up from a deep pool and smack the fly at my feet but that was it.

As the tide ran out, the pool shrunk and the baitfish dissapeared so I moved a fair bit upstream to a fast run where I had 7 finnock in a very short time as well as numerous pulls in the fast water which I could not hook up.

Great fun indeed.

I was doing a bit of bank strimming today on a stretch of the river that I have been fishing lately, a stretch where I'm failing to find the rising fish that I was hoping to find there ....... You've guessed it already haven't you, no rod with me today and they were rising all over the place, even though I was making all that racket on the bank :z4  :z4  :z4

Cheers

Mike you must know that you will always see mower fish when grass cutting.  :X2

Grass carp perhaps ;)

It is funny how fish sometimes come over to see whats happening. I have seen fish sitting feet away from someone banging in poles to make a platform in the past.

Eventually got myself out for a few hours in an almost salty bit.  My first time out on the Don all season. Had four finnock (three wee ones and one about 1-2lbs. Left my weight net in the car,  broke my five weight (second time I've had a tip section snap for no apparent reason) and didn't get a picture of the bigger fish. Bugger!

Had a great time watching two seals go up and down a pool.

Home now for a cider and a pot of tea.

That 2nd fish is a belter what a greedy bugger! Was that your car parked at the side of the road yesterday near the council water with the road works? (trying to say where it was without actually mentioning it)

Like that pic Mike, but it's got the look of a wee bit of early back end colour?

Yes Allan, that's an Autumn pic from last year sorry .............. Here's one from tonight, just before heading home, not the best of pics I'm afraid

Quite a good rise all evening, mainly smaller fish, but a number of nice fish showed themselves every now and then too. Couldn't crack it again tonight, a few swirls to the DHE and a Sedge pattern, hooked a couple of wee ones, but although I was covering lots of trout I just didn't have a clue! :oops

Ditch the curved hook style flies (yes i really did just say that  :wink) for flat parachute style or even better smaller CDC types. (About the only time i really look to fish these to be honest).

Well, it finally happened. I had a LARGE Brownie hit a fish I was playing! I have heard of this happening but this is the first time I have had it happen to me on the Don.

The poor wee trout I was playing was almost decapitated. The culprit, a Brownie which was certainly bigger than my biggest Don brownie, clearly seen in the extremely low and clear water, right at my feet.

Whats more, it hit the small trout in less than 8" of water and 2 feet from the bank in an area where you would swear blind there were no trout. Must have been laying in the weed, just waiting.

Just goes to show that trout will still feed in bright sunshine if given a meal worth moving for.

Having lost 2 decent fish recently (IMHO purely down to staying on the bank) I took no chances yesterday and went in after hooking this on't dry.

Even with my wading staff I couldn't stay on my feet and took a tumble - always the pro I kept clutching the rod even while doing breast stroke & fortunately the fish stayed on.

Mobile phone & camera totalled  :oops  but it's what we do
