Sandy I'm a martyr to my Arthur Ritus so wouldn't write unneccessarily.

I was wondering if some species that you were targeting had hard mouths and the debarbed hooks were for better penetration. 

I'm aware of the catch and release aspect of debarbed hooks so am now considering the fact that if you spend possibly a lot of money and I'd imagine a lot of physical effort SWFF'g then surely the last thing you want is to lose a fish -  I'm going to show my ignorance here and say that most sea fish that I've caught in the past have what looks like relatively large 'hardy' mouths and wonder if , though commendable, barbless hooks are worth the worry?
worry may not be the best word but I think you'll get my drift.
I'm assuming the majority of Pike, Salmon and Sea-Trout fly fishers, for example, have a healthy respect for the quarry but are loathed to go barbless for that very reason.

I still don't see why the species, size or costs involved should
make me resort to barbed hooks. Barbless makes for quicker unhooking,
so the fish can be returned whilst in the water. It also makes taking a hook out of your hand
much easier and should I get snapped there is a far greater chance of the fish shedding a barbless hook.
So what if I don't get them all in, the take is the buzz along with that initial blistering run.
I might take the odd trophy photo, but only as a personal record of either a new species or a specimen.

I have fished barbless for everything for the last 10 years, and so it will continue.
now you have made me sound like a preacher I hope you are happy with my response.

No special reasons, just good fishing.

on the barbless thing.i belive in them.last sunday i never debarbed a size 10 cats wisker booby and it hit me on the back or the head.it wasnt nice getting it out.i will be making sure i debarb all my flie now

Try lakeland flytying, midgar temple hair is about the best thing I know of now dog hair has become more or less impossible to get.  Veniard do a 3x long arctic fox which is good but midgar has the edge, reflected in the price but it is still good value for the quality of hair you get.

Thats an awesome looking fly Peter. Looks like alot of work has gone into it.  I have seen alot of these in display cases etc. Do many people still fish with this style? Does it have the same following as eg, the guys that only fish cane rods?

I always find it amazing in this sport how things go in and out of fashion.

I think there may be some who use fully dressed flies to fish with but that fly took me about 20 hours over around 2 months to tie :z19 :z19. The real cost is in materials and I simply couldn't afford that investment to get chewed up casting, never mind a fish. Moving the fly quickly or touching the wing will bugger up the set of the feathers so this one is for display purposes only.

Heading out on the Don tomorrow so thought i would sit at the vice and see if i was inspired. I have been messing about with cascade style flies in various colours. Heres a few fresh off the vice. Go easy

The flash in the wing/tail of this one is pearl UV enhancer. I really liked the effect. Stole/borrowed the idea of adding it to salmon patterns from a wee fly i was shown on the Tay called a "pert shrimp" Must have originated on the Esk.

I am really struggling with hackles at the moment. I am tying them in at the tip and trying to judge the length but its frustrating the hell out me! I am using the veniards packets of hackles. Would it make a huge difference if i invested in some capes? orange/red/yellow/black??

Nice flees Paul, i recently binned what i had left of packets of hackles! If i had one word to sum them up it would be, pish 
Capes are worth every penny IMO
