So Ive tried a wee SBS for the Snowshoe sedge. Hopefully it comes out ok. Trying out a few new products from Fulling Mill.
Recipe:
Hook: FM 5060 size 14 for this SBS, 12-18
Thread: unithread 8/0. I’ve used Camel
Tag: mirage tinsel
Rib: fine copper wire
Tail: FM Ultradry yarn in light Dun
Body: FM ultradry dub Hares ear
Under wing: FM ultradry yarn tan
Over wing: natural snowshoe
Thorax : aft half, natural snowshoe, fwd FM Ultradry dub in pepper box.
Put the hook in the vice at an angle to make the tag easier
Tie in the tail, the mirage and the copper wire
Tie in down round the bend to set the tag
Wind the mirage up 4 or 5 turns and tie in
Wax the thread and dub on the hare’s ear
Wind on the dubbing up to just over the halfway mark. Follow with the rib, tie down and Reposition the hook in the vice
Tie in the underwing
Cut some snowshoe at a nice length and remove the under fibres, tie in the wing
Trim the butts at an angle and tie in with some more waxed thread
Cut some more snowshoe and remove under fibres, place in a dubbing loop and spread out a bit
Add some pepper box dubbing to the loop
Spin until nice and tight and spiky
Wind on carefully, stroking the fibres backwards to prevent bulk and trapped fibres
Whip finish and varnish.
Attack it with a dubbing brush, and brush it away from the eye
It should look roughly like this
Finally trim the underside flat and shape top as required, to get a nice sedgey shape.
Here’s a wee video to show the finished profile.
