My tying of a dressing by Matt Faber. An interesting combination of modern and traditional.
The hook is a Partridge Klinkhammer, Gallo de Leon tail, Turkey Biot body, duck quill wing slips (poly yarn works too), dyed chinese cock for the hackle.
A clever dressing, easier than it looks, sits beautifully on water.
1 Wrap the thread round the bend. The tails should angle up.
2 The tail is Gallo de Leon barbs, grey or speckled to match the body colour.
3 Trim the butts of the tail fibres. Build up a tapered under-body. Catch in a dyed turkey biot by the tip. (Turkey biots are longer and more pointed than goose biots so they suit this sort of body.)
4 Wrap the biot in overlapping turns and tie down.
5 Invert the hook.
6 Attach two matching wing slips from mallard or teal wings. The wings should be about the middle of the thorax area ahead of the body.
7 Trim the butts.
8 Attach a suitable hackle. This is and olive – so the biot and hackle are shades of olive.
9 Wrap the hackle in open turns to the eye and tie down the hackle.
10 Trim off, whip finish, cement the head. Cutting some of the hackle below the shank, clear a sort of V under the hook, helps the fly sit with the tail and wings above the water surface.
