Fishing The Fly Scotland Forum

Howard & Stuart

Down Lochter way last week we had a sudden Winter Wonderland on Friday but on either side of that wheel sliding/bumper crunching day, even though cooler weather prevailed, there was plenty good sport to be had.

In these cooler conditions anything with the word “cat” in it purred away effectively, be that the cat bug or cat’s whisker.

One exponent of this was Scott Thorburn who fished cat bug most of the day and it secured him 16 fish to the net.  Also doing well on this fly was Colin Inglis with 14 fish, Martin Davidson with 9 fish, Jim Esslemont had 8 fish as did Neil Clubb.

Paul Ingram fished the cat’s whisker on a intermediate line which got him 12 fish and Kenny Thomson had 9 fish on the cat’s whisker this time on a sink tip line.

Johnny Thackery had 20 fish mixing it up between the popular blue damsel and a variety of cormorants.  Craig Whyte kept faith with the bloodworm and buzzers for his 16 fish and also on 16 was Steve Corsar who mainly concentrated on the apps bloodworm.

Looking through the return book, Stuart Howie had 13 fish using small lures and nymphs, Ernie Mackay had 12 fish by straight lining buzzers, Johnny Lewis had 12 on apps bloodworm or snakes, Rod Palmer used cormorants or red and black lures for 11 fish, Declan McFarlane used either the hares ear or squirmy worm for 11 fish.

Bart Lawrenson used lures and cormorants for his 10 fish, Sandy Gatt used nymphs for 9 fish and Lesley Johnson had her 7 fish on damsels and cormorants.

With windy weather forecast for the week ahead, then the positive to take is that we won’t be frozen over and a good bit of ripple on the water certainly improves the catch rate, so there a bit of good news.
