Down Lochter way last week the continuing fine weather brought eager anglers out in their droves. While driving to work one such morning on the radio was Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald and I was drawn to the lyrics which went:-
“Summertime and the livin’ is easy,
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high,”
Well the fish at Lochter were not so much jumping but there were great numbers breaking the surface avidly intent on munching on all available insect life. It was a fine sight to see and it is the time of year when we would really appreciate these simplier things in life. Slow down a bit and ‘smell the roses’ as they say.
On the fishing front, there were a variety of methods that proved successful even in the bright and warm conditions.
Albert Cowie from Fraserburgh had 2 outings and had 20 and 14 fish by mostly floating a team of buzzers in the ripple and he also mixed it up with a hare’s ear.
Steve Clark (not the Scotland manager) used a variety of flies including buzzers, dry’s and then a fab and this adaptability got him 15 fish.
Albert Trail and Bill Wood from Aberdeen had 14 and 10 fish respectively and did a bit of klink and dink fishing as well as using buzzers.
The ever reliable Jim Whyte fished mostly the Muckle Troot with a team of buzzers and they did consistently well for his 14 fish.
Colin Taylor from Newmachar used a fab, which he stripped quickly through the water, and this brought a lot of interest from surface feeding fish and he landed 11 fish.
Brian Ross made a welcome return and fished natural dry flies during an evening session and he was very happy with his 10 fish.
Gavin Smith, on holiday from Fife, popped past for an evening session and he used small black klinkhammers and a crippled midge on a floating line which got him 8 fish to the net.
Special mention that Jim Gilmore landed a lovely 15lb specimen during his session on Saturday. Well done for keeping a hold of it.
Another reminder that there has been some really great evening rises of late so why not give it a go.
