Lochter Report - Bittersweet May at Lochter
« on: 04/05/2021 at 11:49 »
Down Lochter way last week the heralding of May brought to mind the saying:- “Queen of months supremely fair, cloth’d with garments rich and rare, none in beauty can compare with thee sweet May.”

Now ‘sweet’ seemed a very long way off as you looked out the bothy to see the squalls of hail and sleet brought in by a bitter northerly wind. However once they cleared we then had longer spells of bright sunshine and if you chose a sheltered spot it verged on almost being pleasant.

All week we had a heavy presence of sand martin’s feeding avidly on very small emerging offerings and considering the conditions we had some very good returns with sub surface tactics proving the most successful.

Mike Skene fished squirmy worms and cormorants during his day session and he had 20 fish to the net.

Graeme Duthie also went down the cormorant route but mixed it up with a fab as well and he did well with 17 fish.

Jim Whyte fished thrice last week, getting 12/15 and then 20 fish for his sessions using buzzers or fabs.

Davy Wood had two outings where he mostly used a white WSW fished slow and deep and he had 16 and then 11 fish and took home 3 nice fish for an 18lb total.

The dynamic duo of Fred McAlley and Neil Garden enjoyed an outing together and they had 12 fish and 16 respectfully both using mostly the apps bloodworm and buzzers.

Bill Wood – on a solo mission – managed to land 15 fish using buzzers, blobs and diawl bachs.

Stuart Horne managed to get 16 on variety of lures as did Bill Bain who got 12 fish.

Special mention to Haddo House Angling Club who had a well attended competition on Sunday with Gordon getting 20 fish on buzzers, Jim 14 on small nymphs and Mark 13 fish on lures and nymphs.

One can only hope that for the week ahead the sand martin’s can resume their aerial residency over the lochs and some top of water activity can begin.

To accommodate this, we are now open in the evenings until dusk, so hopefully it will give you the opportunity to enjoy any evening rises that occur.

Tight lines,

S.P 4/5/21
