Waders for cold weather
« on: 11/04/2021 at 16:25 »
So , my go-to waders for float tubing (vision sub zeros) have a leaky stocking foot. Normally aquasure sorts it but not this time. The leak is slow but annoying. I currently get round it by wearing a seal skinz sock which keeps my foot dry
 However it's a pain.
It seems there are very few neoprene stocking foot waders these days. Any recommendations?
I could use breathables but it would be cold - does anyone know of good thick base layers that would give me the equivalent warmth of neoprene?

Thanks Mike

All wader stock is poor at the moment, and its set to get worse before it gets better. Its a combination of lack of factory time in the east and a global lack of shipping containers.  Its not the waders that are particularly the problem, though this is an issue for some, its also components, like zips and buckles. The shipping costs have gone up 600% in some cases so lower cost bulky items are no longer viable to ship, as their price point would soar. Heavy boxed neoprene waders could be a problem for some time, i am told it could be September before all the usual lines are available again. Many of the suppliers are trying to avoid having to put a chunk of cost onto their waders as it would kill them off, so its actually better for them to simply not ship them for now.
For cold weather you have a couple of choices, i have a very small number of warranty replacement stocking foot neoprenes, but for very cold stuff dont rule out breathables. Remember neoprene is an insulator, it will keep things hot or cold. With  modern base layers, thinsulate insulation and the like you can easily keep as warm with a breathable as a neoprene. Back in my diving days we woukld dive under ice in thin suits, like breathables but 3 times thicker, but we would have 4 properly designed layers beneath the suit. This may give you a few more options for which is, i hope, a short term problem.

Angling Active have some Snowbee neoprene stocking foot waders.

Ordered  a pair from Dave. Just like he said everyone else is pretty much out of stock!
What I would say is if you have a slow leak in a wader boot sealskinz socks are a good temporary workaround!

Out of interest Dave, what would be your suggested baselayer for tubing in the Highlands with breathables?

hi James,

for base layers, the warmest I've worn are from Reed Chillcheaters: https://www.chillcheater.com/baselayers-and-undersuits - think they are kayaking/canoe specialists, so similar market to float tubing i guess.

Their Transpire long baselayer trousers are brilliant; very, very warm indeed, and very stretchy so that they move with you well. Plus, very high waisted, so you can have them pulled up to your belly button or higher. Not a stylish look... but it's fishin, not fashion!

I wear the long fleece baselayer trousers under my breathable waders when river fishing; great, as they are warm (sometimes toooo warm) and don't hinder movement. It does mean i have to strip down to my undies in fishing car parks, but i've long since stopped being bashful :-)

I haven't yet tried the double-thickness leggings yet, nor the Woolley bear suit - it looks ridiculously warm; they could be great options for tubing

Only negative for me was the top layer - sooo warm that any walking about caused excessive heat. BUt excellent for tubing

cheers
iain
