Down Lochter way last week the mild mid-Winter weather brought out a keen battalion of enthusiastic fishers just happy to be out fishing when normally ice and frostbite to the extremities reigns supreme.
Usually at this time of year sinking lures fished slowly would be the normal way to go but it could be seen that there were many fish moving on top or near the top of the waters and they were evidently feeding and active. For many a floating lure with a long leader and maybe a beaded lure was all that was needed to reach these active fish or alternatively a floating line with short sink tip attached as long as it was retrieved quite briskly.
All the tried and tested lures from decades past still haven’t last their effectiveness and these included the yellow dancer, cat’s whiskers and fritz of various colours.
Billy Reid up from Dundee for the day fished both orange then white fritz and he was well chuffed with 15 fish for his full day’s session.
Local angler Paul Keir had two outings during the week and he did well in both bringing 9 then 18 fish to the net this time on olive and white fritz.
Graham Duthie from Aberdeen also came out twice and he used mostly the yellow dancer lure, which was most effective as it got him 12 then 7 fish.
Steve Argo came out at the weekend and fished his favourite cat’s whiskers lure and he was happy to land 10 fish with it.
Paul Ingram from Newmachar used a cat’s whisker with a cormorant on the dropper and this got him 9 fish to the net for his day.
Looking through the Returns Book, Peter Young fished blobs across at his favourite spot at the Muckle Troot and he had 20 fish, Neil Smith had 11 on buzzers, Kenny Riddell 8 on the black blobs, R. Prentice 7 on the mop fly, Jim Eddie 6 with the sunburst cormorant and Simon Ruddiman from Aberdeen had 5 on the bloodworm.
A reminder that Lochter is holding a heat of the Scottish Bank Championship on Saturday 7th March. Although its entry list is full we are collating a reserve list as we anticipate that many on the entry list may qualify at earlier heats and then free up spaces.
