went out to chuck some Pike budgies at a local loch , but I didn't fancy chucking these into the wind so I went looking for Chantarelle, and managed to get about 2 lb, so a fry up tomorrow, Derek Roxborough

Nice one. I have never picked mushrooms myself, from what i have been told I though it would have been getting a bit late. What is the Chantarelle season?

September October , they are going over now but there's still a few worth getting, I usually time them with the Bramble picking, Derek Roxborough

July/August is good in my part of Aberdeenshire, before they fully open up.
Ceps have been great this year.

Chanterelle always smell of Apricots, field mushrooms smell of Aniseed, Derek Roxborough

Hi Colin

Mushrooms and toadstools from the Collins 'Gem' series is a great wee guide which, because of it's size, can be taken with you while foraging.
Mushroom Identifier by Peter Jordan is another book i would recommend.
I would stick to the easily identified species of which Chanterelle,Ceps and Oyster mushrooms are perhaps the tastiest and safest to pick.
