Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a 10' #4 for the new season, and would be grateful for advice or recommendations on mid-price range rods. It's for use on medium-sized rivers,  and would ideally be versatile enough for various nymphing techniques, spiders and dry fly fishing as I don't like taking two rods when roving. I'd be particularly keen to hear from people who've used the Marryat Tactical or Vision Tane rods.

Not sure if it's more than you plan but I've a 9ft 5wt guideline fario which is a nice rod and a guy I know has the 10ft 4wt and loves it, he uses it for a mixture of fishing as you mention so that would be one I would suggest.

Just joined the Marryat Pro Team and have to say i'm very impressed with the versatility and smoothness of the Tactical Dry 10' #4 and #5 weights which along with the Tactical Pro 10' 6" #3 Nymph special will make up my go to river and loch fishing armoury this season.

The new Orvis Recon 10' #4 felt very good in my hand (albeit in the shop), the new Streamflex GR70 looks good and feels decent enough. I personally just use my 9' #4 One for everything but large heavy streamers. I don't really buy into the 'you must use a 10' rod to nymph properly' thing. Each to their own though.

Get out and try a few and go with what feels best not what's fashionable!

I built myself a 10 foot #4 Pacific Bay Quickline for less than £200...could do it even cheaper but I spent a lot on cork and guides   

The blank is about £100 and very nice indeed. Its capable of fishing spiders and dries as well as bugging and nymphing. Tippy but takes on a nice bend when a fish is on. One of those vastly underrated blanks that quite a few rod builders are using on rods they sell for £400.
