It was interesting to see anglers at Lochter Fishery in Oldmeldrum delayering when at this time of year they would be putting on an extra layer.
The warm calm conditions also saw a huge migration of small spiders wafting along on their long silk parachutes. Large numbers of these dropped into the lochs much to the delight of the trout.
Liam Stephen noted this, put on some small dry flies and was rewarded with ten fish to the net plus many more missed, as is the nature of dry fly fishing.
At the time of writing there is another migration in progress, which will bring the trout to the top again.
Local master of the flick retrieve, Ronnie Ewan was on top form, catching and releasing fifteen on cormorants while the ever consistent Peter Young used a mix of okey dokeys and bunny leeches to land fourteen including two lovely five pounders.
Albert Trail used buzzers and was delighted with his bag of sixteen, as was C. McHugh who had fifteen on a white lure.
There were many bags of six and seven and assortment of flies appeared in the catch record indicating that the trout are feeding hard, building up strength for winter…. When it comes!
