Might go down on Friday as I can't do Saturday or Sunday.

I expect the fisherman's row to be less than inspiring - again  :roll

I wonder what Fishermans Row will be like this year ....... A bit disappointing in recent years, but I'd love to see this growing again!

Enjoyed the casting demos yesterday with James Tomlinson and Andew Toft. Must have been hard going in the baking heat.

Wonder how James would get on with his long casts on the Don with giant hog weed high banks and trees  :z8 :z8

Great display of casting tho from both Andrew and James  :z16 :z16

A good fair though Saturday mornings rain was biblical. Fisherman's row was reduced again :cry .  Think there's a lot of reasons for that but we've been contributors to the decline  if we have attended and not bought stuff to give the stallholders enough profit to bring them back.  A lot of  'try before you buy' was being done but the 'buying' was done later on the net :oops

That's a pity Peter ( although I thought that might be the case ) perhaps the time has come to buy a tent and support the event with a Barrio stand :z3

I know what you mean about "try before you buy" ..... I sold products from a well known brand at the fishery in the early days and offered try before you buy. A lot of folk tried products and then showed them to me next time they came to fish, having bought them elsewhere :z4

I've looked at stand prices etc before and to be honest, we can't just go to these events looking for sales and bargains, I think it needs to be more of a meet and support attending stands thing.

Cheers
Mike

at least that won't happen to you, Mike because they can't buy them elsewhere...  :wink

as for fair prices in general, outside of peeking in bargain bins i haven't seen a 'better than shop price' in at least 10 years and this from fairs all over Europe. ready-made flies seem to sell but its hard to imagine any interest whether it be the buyer or seller.
sign of the times me thinks...
cheers,
marc

Did Somers tackle have  Mackenzie DTX demo rods for the public to try  i never noticed if you could try before buying  :z8 :z8.

The food and beverage stalls were fairly priced i though 2.50 a coffee 4 quid for a cold can or draught pint and a fiver for a burger seems fair enough to me considering the pitch costs. Best Venison burger ave tasted as well  :z16

Scott Mackenzie and Andy Toft were supposed to be kicking around on the Somers stand and there should have been Mackenzie DTX gear to try as I saw Scott getting some extra stuff together for the show before he went off to Norway the weekend prior to the Scottish Game Fair.

Wish I could have made it but been up to my eyes at home. Next year though  :z16

I did not go this year as every year I say, "It will be better next" and it never has been.

The first year I went, Greys, Hardy, Partridge and Bruce and Walker had stands. Not a shop with those products, but the actual manufacturers.  I think Farlows was there too. Last year we had several "bargain basement" shops selling cheap tat that would not looked out of place in Aldi.

Somers, Angus angling, and a couple of the fly tying specialists usually are pretty good, but the rest? Debatable.

I think the other issue is that people go along for " a bargain" and are disappointed. By the time you pay fuel, cost of your lunch and the entry fee, you are £50 down to start with, take your family and you are closer to £100. So that bargain needs to be saving you at least £50 straight off.

I want to go and see the latest tackle from companies I would not normally get to see, have a cast, wind a handle, chuck a fly line, look for unusual fly tying tools/materials...not see dustbins full of cheap Chinese spinners, £20 starter rods and mill end fly lines.

Aye did see Scott Mackenzie talking to some customers  at Somers who had the best stall so he was putting in the graft for some sales. He also got a good turn out in the main ring for a introduction to Salmon fishing.

i have to say tho it is a tad disappointing when GAC don't make the effort as they are in a position to offer some bargains  :z8 :z8

GAC are going to take the slot Sportfish normally have at the CLA so, unfortunately, it was always likely that the Scottish Game Fair would take second place for them commercially.
The CLA being considerably bigger and more expensive to attend.

Other than Somers, just who did have stalls on anglers row :?

Ultimate fishing supplies had a decent stall and a few good offers. A few fly tying stalls and Angus Angling was there although i must have blinked and missed them.

I purchased some flees from UFS and  had one of there S/B on last night  and it seemed to work. Cracking condition and took off like a bullet after unhooking.

Just in Somers...apparently the others were Angus Angling, Anglers Creel and UFS....4 stalls.

Colin mentioned that the cost alone was enough to put off most.

Correction on Angus Angling i do remember there stall and it was okay really and fair play to them for being there.

A wee bit more flees to look at would have been better tho.

The first year I went there were at least 40 angling stalls, probably more. They went down fishermans row and finished in a T shape with the extra stalls across the top by the river.

Greys had a stall that took up three pitches and had a casting pool behind where you could try rods. Hardys was pushed around the corner ;)

Commercialism at the worst, stall prices on the way up so less people take stalls, ticket prices on the way up to cover fewer stalls, so fewer people turn up. I don't have an answer...but a few years an the thing will be gone if it carries on.

The "Carp" shows down south attract huge crowds and the manufacturers turn up.

Going to have to wait till I win the lottery so I can afford things like that I don't understand why the events like this have to be so expensive. Take the Portsoy boat show that the weekend £25 for family ticket and £6 pounds a burger £ 3 for a bottle of coke that cost £1.50 anywhere else. All be it off my bucket list , and that's the point prices like that are driving people away from events like this thus the company's probably get charged a fortune for stalls. Oh great Echt show this weekend wire cutters to break in and a pack lunch sorted.
Rant over
