There was a full house of eager anglers for the September Singles competition on Sunday. Conditions had been forecast to be fine but when the day dawned it was found to be wet for most of the morning with a moderate breeze. However it was a keenly fought contest, which couldn’t have been closer with 3 anglers tied on 13 points in first place. This meant that we adhered to the countback system which is determined by who scored the best at the first pegs. When this was calculated it was found that Charlie McPhee from Peterhead had come first, Ernest MacKay Jnr from Hatton second and Ronne Ewen from Macduff third.
Well done to all those who took part and out next competition will be a doubles one with details to follow next week.
On the fishing front it could clearly be seen that diawl bachs and buzzers proved to be a very successful combination. Dougie Mair led the way with 27 fish brought to the net at the Muckle Troot loch. Also using diawl bachs were Graham Duthie from Aberdeen who landed 20 fish, Steve Prince from Oldmeldrum with 19 fish and Jim Walker with 14 fish. Looking through the Return Book other successful flies were found to be the Kate McLaren which got Derek Gray 23 fish for the day, Pete Young had a day session where he landed 19 fish on mop flys and fabs, Scott Sim had 17 fish on the fritz, Gary Morrison 14 fish on the hummumgus and Neil Buchan 10 fish on the bunny leech.
A special mention for Mary Barnett from Aberdeen who fished here on Saturday with her son and daughter. Mary is shortly to celebrate her 87th birthday and she fished a team of buzzers in the wind and rain and was rewarded with 3 plump fish, which she was going to take home and share with her neighbours. Another highlight was her delicious home baked walnut and coffee cake which went down very well in the bothy to round off a great day for her.
It just proves that angling is a sport for all generations and long may it continue.
