It's been a bit frustrating this past week at Artloch with plenty of rising fish, but they've proved challenging to catch. The weather played an important part and the bright sunny conditions did not help, but October has certainly heralded the arrival of Autumn!
While buzzers, dries and nymphs again proved the most consistent flies, the WSW and Yellow Dancer have been successful. Some good fish in the 4 to 8 lbs range continue to be caught, with the occasional larger fish taking the fly. J McKenzie released a double figure fish during his visit, while R Main's basket included a nice 7lbs bow. Junior J Petrie landed a nice 6lbs rainbow and F Roberton had a nice brace at 9lbs, while D Phillips released 10 fishing a Diawl Bach. Visitors D Black and K Hearn tempted 12 and 14 using a variety of nymphs and I Templeton using a Bloodworm and Dunkeld released 15. I Sutherland was top rod with 17, including a nice 7 lbs rainbow using dries and buzzers.
Sharpe's Fun Day proved a great success, raising almost £300 for local charities.
: There were between 60 and 70 visitors who look full advantage of the weather and Frank Moors of the Fly Tier Guild, Jim Crawford, professional fly fisherman and contributor to Today's Flyfisher and Gary Turner, a Sharpe's Guide asking a variety of questions and picking up a lot of useful tips and advice. While competition for the distance and accuracy was keen, the eventual adult winner was R Ewen with 25.5m, while the junior winner was P Farquhar with 21.5m. P Farquhar had a very good day because he also won the first prize in the Sharpe's Draw. The adult accuracy competition was won by D Limond with 75 points on the very last attempt! Thanks to Sharpe's of Aberdeen, Huntly Rotarians, Brogan's Bouncy Castles, Rev A Willis and Charles Smith for their help in donating equipment and material.
