LDO Sub Imago

I've been looking for something newish for the forthcoming season which might give me an edge over the Trout.

I've been fooling around with LDO Duns.

Here's one photographed (from a bit too far so picture not too great) at the weekend, and a pattern I'm working on.

I've done an SBS but I have two modifications to perform first to prevent the crowding at the head.

looking good. love the shape of the hooks

there were wee tiny hatches of olives midday -1330 last thursday, friday, saturday, despite blustery winds. Trout weren't showing much interest, but nice to see a bit of fly life

Nice Iain, nice.
I love that shade of Pearsals thread. I use it for my favourite klinks and Greenwell-ish wets.
Grizzle works very well with it.
Lovely fly. What is the hook?

Mr Cameron,
Glad to see you can get away from work and check on hatches. Changed days for me I'm afraid  :z16
I did spot some nice trouty water from the Eurostar last week though :X2

Lovely Iain,

How do you find the SLD's.  I think they are beautiful hooks to look at but rubbish to fish with.  I dropped a 'wheen' of fish on them last ear and when I moved back to the Tiemco's all was well again

Give me a 103 any day  :wink

Not got out yet as I am flat out with my new forestry business.  From what I can gather though its fishing well.  I'm going to try to get out on Monday afternoon though.

I read somewhere (on a blog) where someone raised the point that the 'new' SLD's appear to be exactly the same profile as 103BL's ? He stuck some photos up and I have to say they looked identical to me.

Have found the SLD's to be okay, in fact just ordered some 12's for a few more MB's for next week. I do tend to use more 103's though !

I found the SLD's straightened out.  I think the wire is better quality on the 103's

John,
below is 3 of 4 103's in #15 & #17 that pooped themselves last weekend. 4wt rod with 4lb tippet, all fish in the 1 3/4lb - 2 1/4 lb range.

6 fish finished off these hooks before a #18 SLD accounted for the same qty of fish without incident.

I tied these on Friday night with the hope of refreshing my opinion of their ability to handle 'a good sized river trout'

My opinion is unchanged.

gauge does look very similar but can't comment on the wires yield.
Possibly I play fish too hard but I don't think so, ever tried to get a 3/4lb Brownie out of a weedbed?

all the best

Iain
