The back end of the year has always been a time of plenty in the countryside. Crops are gathered from the fields , orchards, woods and hedgerows and taken in for winter storage and subsequent use. The same is the case on the waterside with fish gathering in rivers and lochs and feeding well in anticipation of the hard months ahead. Anglers are able to take advantage of this activity and catch a few extra fish to pop into the freezer or smoker for winter use.
Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum has been making a significant contribution to anglers fish supplies during the past week with excellent bags being caught throughout the period. Catch returns in double figures featured regularly and a wide variety of methods were successful.
Among those scoring ten plus were Dave Barron ,M Roy from Monifieth, B Dunlop, C A Moffat from Nairn, I Morrison, John Parsons, F Simms, A Brain, G Murdoch, J White, W Olssen and E Mackay from Aberdeen. The most successful fly patterns were dries, okey dokey, wsw, black tadpole, cinnamon and gold, bunny leech, dawsons olive and black buzzers. Quite a wide spread indicating again that the fish were in hungry mode and willing to take an assortment of well presented flies .
I notice the weathermen are promising us a brief Indian summer which should add to the anglers enjoyment .There is nothing finer than to be out on the waterside catching a fish or two and at the same time looking out at the autumn tints, watching the swallows gather, the geese arrive and breathing in the fine unpolluted Scottish air.
