This is a quick refresher of doing step by steps just to get my eye in for the start of the competition next month.
The temptress variant.
Tube: 15mm brass bottle tube
Body: Silver lite brite
Hackle 1: Pink saddle hackle
Wing 1: Red angel hair, claret artic fox, red angel hair
Hackle 2: Pink saddle hackle
Wing 2: Dark pink artic fox, red angel hair
Wing 3: Light pink artic runner
Hackle 3: Black schlappen
Cheeks: Jungle clock eyes.
Head: clear varnish
This is a pattern called “The Temptress” it’s by a man called David Ballingal who ties very nice flies often with a little twist here and there. This a slight variation of the pattern but roughly as he made it, the main difference being that I used pink hackle where as he calls for magenta badger and I've put in three wings rather than just two.
I’ve used a 15mm brass bottle tube, line the bottle tube, and fit the tubing for the hook. I keep the tubing long so that I can hold it in the tube adaptor and it stops the bottle tube spinning.
Quickly run the thread to the back of the tube and give it a quick coat of super glue, so that the thread on the tapered part of the tube doesn’t slip forward.
Dub on a body of silver lite brite to the front of the taper part of the tube.
Tie in a pink saddle hackle
Make three turns of the pink hackle doubled over. Tie it in.
Trim off the access and tidy up the head area.
Tie in two strands of red angel hair and double it back. The easiest way to do this is to slip the angel hair in the
middle underneath the tying thread and then tie it down with a few turns and then fold the angel hair back and tie it down again . Then trim it off to the correct length.
Tie in a bunch of claret artic fox with plenty of under fur in it to give the wing some volume.
Again tie in a few strands of red angel hair.
Tie in another pink saddle hackle.
Tie in some pink artic fox, a bit longer than the first bunch and with less under fur in it.
Tie in a few strands of red angel hair.
The final part of the wing is some light pink artic runner.
Tie in a black schlappen hackle and make three turns , the hackle should be a bit shorter than the pink hackles used
previously.
Tie in two jungle cock eyes. I keep the stalks long.
I tie in each side separately and then double back the stalks. Give it a quick coat of super glue before you whip
finish.
Pluck off the stalks and then give the head two coats of clear varnish. Then trim the tubing to the right length for
the hook of your choice, I like a partridge big mouth doubles.
Hopefully there is the odd curious salmon out there that fancies a nibble!
