Fishing The Fly Scotland Forum

Colin Davidson

Evening all,

Just had a frustrating couple of evenings, and believe me frustrating isnt the first F word to spring to mind! :mad
I'm fishing smallish (12) buzzers and nymphs and diawl bachs and picking up regular fish, waiting for the sun to dip a little and the 'rise' to come on and the conditions have duly obliged, so now i'm fishing shipmans, CDC's, F-fly's, suspender buzzers, yellow owls, every dry i've got or can scrounge and getting barely a peek from a trout, switching back to sub surface bears no fruit either. The fish are most definately feeding and feeding hard but what the hell are they taking?? there were twelve of us on the other night there all fishing variations of a theme, small stuff at various speeds i.e spiders, buzzers, dries... for one fish between us in 40 mins as the last of the light vanished. there are loads of midges around this small loch and some sedges and daddies but they weren't looking at any of these, so i think its something either hatching like buzzers or living completely in the surface film as i couldn't make out anything and the rises were fairly small and neat. Any one else come across this or got some suggestions of what to tie and try??

As always any help will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Colin.

Sounds familiar!

Dont laugh but this does work!
When fish are hard on caenis or small stuff and are giving you no attention, stick on a long leader, deer hair blob on a floating line and rolly polly away !
Find a feeding fish and cast up stream of it and rolly polly past its napper  :z4
If you dont get a couple of troot like this i will eat my hat!

Hi Colin

This can often be bloodworm at this time of year, try size 14 and 16 holo red Crunchers or Diawl Bachs and try to resist the temptation to retrieve them, as they are often taken on the drop :wink

Evening is usually not a time for big bloodworm imitations like the Apps ..... try smaller ones :wink

And of course dry Sedge and Olive patterns, frequently in size 18 to 22 :z3

Cheers Bigtroot and Mike,

I happen to have a blob or two somewhere in one of these boxes so that'll be tried shortly, and i've just taken delivery of some of these mythical tiny hooks, think im gonna need some finer tying threads too though as these tiny shanks fill up fast! i'm gonna try tying one of each pattern getting smaller and smaller down to 22's and then try them out. hopefully this will lead to another feather in my bow or something like that! :grin

thanks again,

Cheers,

Colin.
