Lochter Report – Natural selection at Lochter
Down Lochter way there was an unsettling amount of deep thinking pervading the Fishery (not usually to be encouraged) and it came up when speaking about ‘ new methods’ and Charles Darwin famously once said “It is not the strongest of the species that survive nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change”. I doubt that Darwin was an angler but his observation should resonate with any angler who unsuccessfully sticks to the same methods irrespective of weather, season or what you see the fish doing in front of you.So, in this mild weather time of year when basically anything has a chance of working why not, during part of your next session, try a different fly, depth ,line etc and see how it goes.
During last week it was very much’ steady as you go’ normality as far as fishing returns went, with no superhuman feats of counting needed to inhibit your days enjoyment.
Ian Fong used a wide selection of lures to secure his 18 fish,Chris Gordon worked the shimmer worm well for his 15 fish,Graeme Duthie fished the buzzer and blob for 14 fish,Davy Simpson used the apps bloodworm, vicar buzzer and black and white wotsit for his 14 fish and also on this number was Albert Trail using a white mop.
Matthew Reilly used small nymphs for 13 fish,Phil Elrick stuck with his favourite diawl bachs and had one of his best days of late netting 12 fish,Graeme Gauld used the classic buzzer and diawl bach combination for 12 fish, Paul Antipolo used the Montana lure and apps bloodworm for his 12 fish and Fred McCally had 11 fish on the mojito.Others flies that caught reasonably well were the yellow dancer, hothead dancer, white cormorant, lime buzzer and an orange tailed hares ear.
So whatever is your ‘natural selection’, I hope you fare well.
