Down and around Lochter way last week the unrelenting sun continued to beat down and in the farmland surrounding the Fishery was the sight and sound of a regiment of Combine Harvesters slowly,methodically and dependably reaping a much needed bounty for our hard working farmers.
The abundant harvest from the fields was not quite matched by that from our waters but one can quite easily forget that this is merely the norm for this time of the year and conditions.
One of our more ‘mature’ customers who came for a cooler evening session quoted in a dramatic fashion to his bemused friend “The day of fortune is like a harvest day,we must be busy when the corn is ripe”. This seemed to set off a chain reaction because his friend replied appropriately “When we plant in the soil of contemplation we shall reap in the harvest of action” and they headed to the water with a purposeful stride quite happy with their oratory.
This was deep stuff for the assorted bothy dwellers to take in at one time, but it reflected the fact most fishing success was to be had a bit deeper in the water due to the bright conditions.
Bill Cowie was a case in point using a team of buzzers and crunchers which were slowly allowed to descend to the ‘taking depth’ and he had 14 fish for his fine efforts.Bart Laurenson also fished buzzers for 10 fish,Greg Taylor fished cormorants and diawl bachs for 10 fish and on an overcast evening Brian Ross bucked the trend and had some top of the water sport with 10 fish on dry flies.
Steve Prince used buzzers or else olive damsels for 9 fish,Stuart Howie on an intermediate line had 9 fish on a selection of lures,Colin Henderson used the fab and buzzers for 8 fish and Matthew Stewart fished his favourite WSW lure for 8 fish.
I will conclude, still in the harvest theme with the saying that “Happiness is the harvest of a quiet eye”. That’s one to think about but in the meantime tight lines wherever your rod takes you.
