Down Lochter way last week Jack Frost eventually paid a visit and cast his cold Winter breath over Lochter’s normally verdant landscape. However he wasn’t too unkind as he left plenty open water available to fish over.
The main result of the drop in temperature is that catch rates then fall as the fish re-set to the slower pace of Winter mode – so expectation levels had likewise to adjust.
That said it was again a very busy week and there were many anglers who were well into double figures but they were more the exception rather than the rule. Amongst these ranks were some of the ‘big hitters’ of the local competitive angling scene such as Paul Sharp, Neil Scowen, Andy Barrowman and Blaine Lyon who all did well using a variety of assorted nymphs.
The Muckle Troot loch seemed to come into its own last week with Peter Young in double figures using mostly the blob, Graham Duthie using the apps bloodworm and Paul Ingram on the intermediate line with a cormorant and fab combination.
Albert Trail fished the apps bloodworm during his session and was rewarded with 12 fish, Thomas Leslie used both the bloodworm and squirmy worm to get his 12 fish, and Albert Cowie fished the black WSW on an intermediate line for his 10 fish total.
Ernie Mackay fished small nymphs for 9 fish, Bill Wood had 8 on the blob and cormorants and Davy Wood fished a variety of coloured WSW’s for 7 fish.
We continue to stock weekly at present due to the encouragingly number of anglers continuing to fish into the Winter months, so there will be plenty of fresh fish hopefully eager to take your well chosen fly.
