Down Lochter way last week it wasn’t so much the case that our customers were fox-trotting, waltzing or even shimmying their way to the waters edge. However, the partner you needed for success was the ‘dancer’ lure. These come in various colours and plumage and some are named more to catch the fisherman’s eye such as the lap dancer, hotty dancer and pole dancer.
Last week visiting anglers and fishing buddies Stuart Milne and Bob Rankin both from Glenrothes came up for a 3 day fishing break at Lochter to celebrate Stuart’s recent retirement after ’50 years hard graft’ (his words).
Due to the hot sunny weather of last week they struggled a bit the first day getting 5 or 6 fish for their session but for the rest of their stay they were both well into double figures each day by using a variety of ‘dancer’ lures including plain black on an intermediate line. So well done Stuart and we wish you a happy retirement.
The weather was a big factor last week with the bright sunshine forcing the fish to look below the surface for food and unless you were lucky enough to try an evening session where the cloud came over, then dry fly fishing could be very unrewarding.
Paul Ingram from Newmacher fished the Muckle Troot using stalking bugs and he was rewarded with 9 fish mainly on the drop.
Bill Stewart used the tried and tested buzzer and diawl bach combination which got him 6 nice fish and Kenny Anderson kept faith with cormorants and this got him 6 fish also.
Speaking to the evening dry fly fishers the flies that seemed to work best were the yellow owl, olive shipman, black CDC hopper and the olive dun.
A reminder the we are hosting a Scottish Youth Team Fundraising Singles Competition at Lochter on Sunday 13th September.
It’s for a great cause so why don’t you put your name down for what should be an enjoyable day. Entry costs £25 and there are some fine prizes to be won.
