After moaning about the poor recent summers ‘when I wiz a lad the summers were great – we spent oor holidays dooking in the Don’ etc etc. Now when we get a lovely summer ‘ It’s far too het’ ‘Ye canna get to sleep at nights’ etc etc. It’s a no win situation.

At Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum the trout are increasingly getting stressed by the continuing high water temperatures. The process of releasing an already stressed fish has resulted in the fishery temporarily calling a halt to the procedure on the Heron and Osprey Lochs. The Muckle Troot Loch which is much deeper and colder is still okay for catch and release.

During the past week anglers have certainly had to work to attract their fish. Bill Gibb had a dozen using buzzers under a bung and Neil Simmers six using the same method. Small spiders brought nine to the net for C McDonald, black dries worked for Jim Taylor who netted seven while Kevin Hutcheon switched from buzzers to WSW’s to keep the fish interested, ending up with eight nice fish. Sedges and wets were the choice for Robert Devlin with seven to his name and Roy Wilson down from Brae in Shetland used a bibio to grass six.

By and large small flies, slowly presented have done best and this is likely to be the case until the water cools down.

We as well have many rivers that are either closed for recreation, or voluntary closure,  which means if you fish a certain river that is voluntary,  please do it in the very early hours of the morning and stop around  10:00 am. 

The snow pack last winter was so low, it has really brought a lot of hardships on the trout in our rivers.  Stress levels are high as the temps rise and the water warms up.  But here in Colorado we have already had a few snows up in the high peaks.  The meteorologists are saying this could be a good winter for a lot of snow because of the system n the Pacific.  I think it's an El Nino system,  and that either means snow, and lot's of it, or a very dry winter. 

If it's another dry winter, next summer will be devastating to our fish.
