‘Thunder claps and lightning, very very frightening’ so said Queen and so said several anglers at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum. Knowing that the modern carbon fibre rods they were holding are perfect lightening conductors they decided that discretion was the better part of valour and retired to the safety of the Fisherman’s Bothy for a nice cup of tea. Very wise in the circumstances.
It is also said that thunderstorms or perhaps the changes in air pressure associated with these, put fish off the feed and are difficult to catch. Looking at the catch return there could be some truth in that. The wet Saturday cleared the air and the catch figure certainly went up at that point.
Paul Ingram and Trevor de Almeda had seven each on buzzers and hoppers while Pete Green used a pink bloodworm to tempt fourteen. Earlier in the week anglers had to work hard to persuade the trout to take, with the high water temperatures making the fish a bit torpid. Steve Prince stuck with his small buzzers and diawl bachs to bag eight. Alex Harvey had a lovely evening session landing seven using dries, Angus Rutherford had six on buzzers as had Ken Lawson on CDC hoppers. Dries worked for M McLennan who netted six. The fishing was not easy and it is only now, with the water temperature dropping, that anglers should have more action. Siesta time for the fish should pass and their appetites return for a well-presented fly.
