Rob/Sandy,

I am currently in the market for a long ultra light spinning rod.  Something in the 9' to 11' range that would be rated for 2 - 6lb.

As there doesn't seem to be anything on the market unless you spend an absolute fortune I was thinking about building one from a fly rod blank.

I understand that even a fast actioned fly rod is likely to make a slow spinning rod but figured it would be a fun rod to build and should be able to cast light soft plastics a long way.

Any thoughts on this?

You might try looking at Active Angling webpage https://www.anglingactive.co.uk/game-fishing-tackle/spinning/spinning-rods.html they have some spinning rods which will not break the bank and may suit your requirement.
Although I'm not sure what 2-6lb relates to in respect of the gram weight that spinning rods are rated in.
In the past I've found that telescopic rods tend to be in the soft side so that might be another option

Now that is a challenge!!!  But I have the answer

MHX have a "light Freshwater" range of blanks, and in that range they have the Crappie and Panfish selection. There are numerous 9-14 foot blanks  in the range you are looking for. Prices are sub $50.

And if you want an off the shelf rod, Shimano do a range specifically for Euro Trouting The Vengeance and Beastmaster range have a Trout specific 9-10 foot model that casts about 5-25g.

They are normally an order in job, as they are not a UK market item, but Shimano will do that without any issues.

Lastly, the Japanese do some rods as you describe, but they tend to be extremely high end and expensive! Have a look at the Tenryu range, but expect to pay £400-£1000 after import.
