With general disinterest pervading these parts with the news of another election, down Lochter way at this time of year the only important elective issue is what type of fly gets your vote.
This is especially important at this inbetweenie time of a cold Spring before the hope of a slightly warmer early Summer.
It’s all a bit of a quandary-but all is not lost. At Lochter we have a type of exit poll in the form of the Returns Book, sometimes known affectionately/sarcastically as the ‘book of truth’.
Let’s hope this is a poll that will have the fishing pundits approval. They say you only ever need 5 flies, so scrutinizing it since the turn of the year came up with the list of the top 5 flies.
In time honored tradition of reverse order, the results were as follows:-
In 5th place went to the bloodworm. One wonders how long it can hold onto this position before the new fangled shammy and wotsit fly and other car cleaning products take its place.
In 4th came the ever popular damsel fly followed in third place by the ubiquitous WSW (walter’s secret weapon) lure.
Just missing out on the top spot at no. 2 was the Welsh named diawl bach and at no. 1 spot the simple but ever reliable buzzer ruled supreme.
This may spur on the many fishers who are heard to say “I just cannae fish them slow” to persevere. Other notable flies who just missed out were the okay dokey, hares ear, hummungus and the cats whisker.
During the week the changeable weather had many of our customers hedging their bets and using a variety of fly’s.
The newly named dynamic duo of Bill Ferries and Doug Mair had 28 fish between them using a combination of wotsits, buzzers and diawl bachs.
M Daniel had a great day netting 19 fish an orange hotheads and Steve Prince managed 15 fish on buzzers and the hummungus lure. The ever reliable Pete Young landed 12 fish on buzzers then on WSW lure and Graham Duthie had ten fish on the cats whisker lure.
There were plenty people catching 9 fish and they included Brian Ross on dry’s and buzzers, Colin McDonald on buzzers, C Will on green buzzers, A Garden on black buzzers and Karen and Keith Fraser who had 9 between them on olive and black fritz.
Davy Wood continued with his favourite WSW to good effect getting 6 fish and Albert Trail also had 6 on mini lures.
It will be interesting to see how the forthcoming weeks arctic blast will affect the fishing or more importantly the will to get out on the water.
