Mallard dimensions

OK - need a 6wt floating line for my Farlow 8' split-cane fly rod
problem - it has small diameter bridge guides ( think thats the right term) more for a silk line
eg the lined tip ring has an ID of 3mm
could buy a thin Cortland SYLK but mixed love/hate reviews

I need to get my head around this.........
a wt6 will have a fixed AFTM  defined gram weight over the first 30'

a DT line will have a fixed diameter along its belly (after the tip) to achieve  that gram weight
a WF line will have more mass forward on its belly -  so the diameter of the line must be thicker at that point

so will a DT be thinner at its MAX diameter than a WF.................. :z8

Hi John,

The Mallard WF and DT profiles share the same belly diameter in their design  :wink

Off the top of my head ...... the Mallard #6 lines are about 1.25 mm.

Personally, I would choose the Mallard DT for your rod.

Hope that helps,
Mike

Mike

thanks for the info

I have a Mallard WF-6 which I'll use to double check the rods preference;  then place an order

Hi John,

At the kind of distances that you are likely to be casting your rod I don't think you'll find much difference between a WF and a DT.

Tip - Try underlining the rod with a #5 before you make a decision, I often find that I like them like that :wink

Cheers
Mike

Not a bad idea John, the age of the Farlows rod, it may well be rated for a 6wt Silk line, which is dynamically similar to a Modern 5wt (due to the thinner profile of the silk).
Always worth trying a few to see what you prefer. :z16

good call -
the rod appears 'sluggish' with a WF-6,  but picks up and roll casts a WF-5 perfectly
(dont have any DT-lines to try)

so I'll order a DT-5-F Mallard

regards.

Sorry, just sold out this weekend I'm afraid John, I've posted about half a dozen of these today.

But the next batch has been on order for a while and should hopefully not be too far away.

Best wishes
Mike

Hopefully ...... I've got a lot of lines on high priority at the factory at the moment John, but no way of finding out which ones will arrive first I'm afraid.

Best wishes

understood

i am concerned about the extremely small ID of the lined tip ring on the Farlow
all the guides are small bridge(?) type
whilst practicing this afternoon, the braided leader connection to the fly line loop jammed in the tip
I think I'll order a thinner Cortland  Sylk line

and I'll get back to you later for a DT-5-F Mallard  for my 7'7'' Herbert Hatton  - perhaps you could let me know when in stock.?
thanks

it's only money after all.............. :z8

Maybe ditch the braided loop and attach your leader with a constriction, needle or nail knot John?

Cheers.............Mike.................

could do - I've always used Airflo Polyleaders loop-loop
but just bought a 7ft braided leader to use on the river   ( having read good reviews)

back to the drawing board...... :X1

I would imagine that your wee tip ring won't like 'loop to loop' connections and that these are more likely to cause you problems than a fly line diameter.

OK - I'll hold off getting a SYLK -- please let me know when the DT-5-F Mallards arrive

so - how's this .?
needle knot an Airflo 5' floating Poly Leader butt to the line
add 5' of 3lb tippet to the leader loop

still learning - more used to 9'6 6/7 wt rods ... :oops

Have a look at this one for a tapered leader John ... https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5284.msg45128#msg45128

And you'll find some useful ideas and knots here https://www.flylineshop.com/fly-fishing-knots.html

All down to personal choice really

Hope that helps!
Best wishes
Mike
