On a rough cold wet and windy day customers seated in the comfort of the conservatory restaurant at Lochter Activity Centre Oldmeldrum, looking out at some hardy souls casting their flies on the water are sometimes heard to mutter ‘they must be mad’.
On Saturday there were a few ‘mad’ anglers, well wrapped up tholing the sheets of rain. There were also many hundreds of ‘mad’ runners, not at all well wrapped up, competing in the clan charity ‘mud madness’ event which Lochter were hosting for the first time. It was great to see runners of all ages getting plastered with mud as they splished and sploshed there way round the 3km and 5km tracks all in a very good cause. What a hardy lot!
Over the week the fishing has been steady with a variety of flies scoring well. Peter Young had ten, with the best one tipping the scale at 6lb 2 oz, on a mix of lures and nymphs. Craig McLean had a 10 punder among his bag of 8, all tempted by a bunny leech. Alan Morgan netted 8 blobs & WSW’s and Sandy Gray 11 all on lures.
Smaller flies also had their moments, Dave Wilson grassing 9 on bibios & diawl backs, Brian Weir 8 on wets & buzzers and Fraser Clark 7 on buzzers & Cormorants. Top scorer of the week was Jonathan Petrie from Aberdeen who used bloodworms to bring 24 to the net.
The weather is still fine and open so prospects remain good with the colder water ensuring a hard fight from the fish.
