The ultimate waterproof coating. I can see this stuff revolutionising the fishing industry. Waders, jackets even fly lines and fly floatants!

It can even be used to waterproof your phone or camera!

Interesting product Rob :z16

I've seen a few videos of this stuff, pretty impressive, but not practical for anything that you are handling with bare hands .... pity!

Cheers

How come? They coat gloves and boots in the stuff...

Marc Fauvet

because if he's wearing gloves it probably means that it's highly toxic...

i'd wait for a complete report from a trusted independent organism before introducing that in any water system.

He is wearing gloves treated with it, not wearing gloves because of it.

Here is the MSDS for it:

Environmental Fate: When released into the soil, this material is expected to readily biodegrade. When
released into the soil, this material is expected to leach into groundwater. When released into the soil, this
material is expected to quickly evaporate. When released into water, this material is expected to readily
biodegrade. When released to water, this material is expected to quickly evaporate. This material has a log
cient of less than 3.0. This material is not expected to signifi cantly bioaccumulate.
When released into the air, this material may be moderately degraded by reaction with photochemically
produced hydroxyl radicals. When released into the air, this material may be moderately degraded by
photolysis. When released into the air, this material is expected to be readily removed from the atmosphere
by wet deposition.
Environmental Toxicity: This material is not expected to be toxic to aquatic life. The LC50/96-hour values
for fi sh are over 100 mg/l.

Have a look at the MSDS for Coca Cola..it is more hazardous than this stuff!

a lot of careful wording there. "expected" doesn't mean does or doesn't. it's just a guess.

I am guessing you do not work with MSDS's ? ;)

Expected is a common phrase on substances that do not contain any items that are risky. As the main component  is Acetone (98%), which has the following statement "Toxicity of the Products of Biodegradation: The product itself and its products of degradation are not toxic." and the remaining component is Silica, a naturally occuring material (quartz), I would also "expect" no issues :)

Trust me on this one, if there is any risk involved, the MSDS will clearly state it, and also state what to do if a spill/exposure happens. It is an international legal requirement, and hence the reason the MSDS is freely available.

You are at far more risk filling your car with diesel or petrol than you are handling this stuff.

Rob,

I have to agree with Marc, I bought some for my mattress due to my 'lack of control whilst asleep'  problem and although it is true fluid runs off of it, it has left a nasty little rash on my bottom.

Is that your front or back bottom Iain?

Hi Rob,

I'm totally shattered after a day of being out in fresh air, waving rods that are far too long, in conditions that were far too wind ..... a most enjoyable day out :z16

But I think I remember them saying something at the end of the video about the product not being good if it was handled a lot?

Cheers

Its like any other kind of proofing, it would need reapplying to certain things.

I am sure they will develop a way of bonding the silica to a surface with more permanent results one day.
