Would dark brown Partridge feather be a suitable sub for the grouse?  Iain just whenever suits you

at the risk of getting abuse from any fastidious faction.........................of course, why not, that's why I landed with the Grouse.
If it's brown and 'speckledy' go for it, lots of people jam with various bird feathers.

Really nice fly Iain, you've been practicing  .... or is it the loon thats been tying??

Must admit that the MB's are one of the few river flies I tie with a heavy hackle, they're a big fly!

Aye, nae bad.

Mind you if you skipped the tail, used hare's ear for the dubbing and golden plover for the hackle you would have a proper spider that really catches during LDO hatches. A bit like the one on the left here

Nice fly Iain worth having a few in the armoury.

Try it over a yellow thread base sparse dub so the yellow shows through a wee bit or sub the gold rib for yellow floss.
