Which hooks?
« on: 07/10/2009 at 21:06 »
As part of a mission to reduce the variety of hooks that I use to tie Brown Trout flies and to try to tie on as much barbless hooks as possible, can anyone recommend a barbless, standard length shank, nymph hook (sizes 12 - 18)?

If I could get a Tiemco 103BL with a meatier gauge I'd be happy!

Cheers

When you find what you are looking for Iain, let me know!!  Real problem trying to get anything other than barbless dry fly hooks.  I believe Varivas do some but I have not looked as cannot get them at trade  :z4

Hi Baz,

as a 'meat and potato' man I'm using Kamakazi B170's in 14 & 16.
I used to use 'Fulling Mill all purpose' (can't remember the number) but I had one bend in the vise - and I don't mean slightly bend - I could actually hold the eye and twist the whole hook in a circular motion, it was as soft as poop. Never seen anything like it before and since but this along with having a good few bend on me when playing fish has relegated them to the trash can.

What do you use? :z8

Any reason why you dont just crimp the barb down on a normal hook that you like?

I like the wee bump it makes, working on the principle that it helps the hook hold a little better when a fish jumps, open mouthed, gills flared.

Fullingmill do a barbless nymph hook, 31190 i believe.  Not had any problems using this hook.

I use barbless hooks whenever possible as it means there is no chance of me forgetting to do so before using a fly.  also not too keen on breaking barbs off before tying as I don't want bits of metal pinging about the place.

Just squash them down...no pinging :)

partridge sld's are like slightly heavier gauge
103bl's they are also gunmetal not black.
I have been tying on the varivas barbless
dryfly hooks and they are very nice.
I'm sure I posted some pictures late last year :z6
can't remember.

Yeah, Pure Fishing have discontinued the Partridge brand, there is no longer a distributer for Partridge in the UK.  I have heard a few rumours about folk taking it on but nothing concrete.  Bit of a pain for me as it has become a struggle getting hold of Partrige Salar salmon hooks and a few of the flashpoint trout series were seriously good hooks.  To my knowledge Mustad are still making all the partridge range of hooks they are just not available in the UK,

Probably B400's cos the partridge L3A's I've got from the hook mannie in Aberlour are not consistant in small (16&18) sizes I tie F flys in

Hi Baz

I normally tie my F-flies on Kamasan B401's, believe I get a better hook-up than with
the B400's  :wink but as with most things in Fishing, hook choice, is a personal thing.

This a very true statement , i too think when using de bearbed hooks the wee nub made when the barb is flatened actually acts as a mini barb if you know what i mean  :z13

Hi Rob,

Partridge hooks not available in the UK? Can't believe what I'm reading here! If you need them, I can send Ad Swier Pike Fly hooks to you, no problem.
