Hi all , found this site and am looking for advice for what flies will work on the river don at inverurie beat.

Keen to try catch a trout on a home made fly . Still to happen !!!! 

Any tips as where to order the materials as away at the moment and looking to order them on internet , so will be there when I get home next month.

Best Dry Fly I've used is a march brown emerger.

size 12 lightweight hook

tail - deer hair (or red game hackle)

body - hares ear

wing - ginger/cestnut (ish) poly yarn tied about 1/3 way back from the eye sloping at 45 deg over bend

thorax - hares ear

hackle - red game wound over the thorax

Has caught me all my best river trout, including a 23" trout from Monymusk beat 2 as well as losing a grilse on the pool below where I caught the big Troot.

Question 1 .
                   Tail in the photo look like micro fibbets , is it just the way it was taken ? Do you use fibbets?
                  (seem to me like an expensive way to get a tail , but I,m grippy as everyone from here to the   
                   Crask knows   )
Question 2.
                  Do you use floatant on the poly yarn ?

I see youve trimmed the under hackle , any particular shape your'e aiming for ?

the tail is Moser Dust Fibre, much hardier than deer and not too expensive given the amount you use. (it also makes nice spinner wings). Gink the wing & hackle fibre. I trim the hackle flat.

The origional dressing was from a Trout & Salmon in the late 80's so apart from the dust fibres it's not my own dressing - but I haven't heard of it in print since.

It catches at times when no MB's are about too & I dare say if you tied soime up smaller it would continue to catch all season - it works on stillwaters too bye the bye

Hi Pete,
            Cheers for that .I,ve taken to using Tiemco Aero Wing instead of the normal polyprop as I find it is a bit better at shedding water and seems to last longer . Also makes a good sighter (in pink) when klink and dinking.

Have,nt used that Moser stuff , must try some . Thanks for that .
