Quite a few of the raw silks have the tiniest hint of colour when finished. Fine on a coloured Blank but not on a proper clear glass. This one doesn’t
Bringing back the alternative option of the Mushy Pea Olive coloured head.

Finally found d the original Furnace Gold article hidden away inside a folder I used to keep cuttings of all the magazine article flies in.
Trouble with memory is, you might think you're 100% correct but sometimes you're not, as is the case here with me and the Furnace Gold.
I'd forgotten that the body wasn't " solid gold" but open turns to give a segment body ( exactly same as a Pennell but with Gold, not silver.
So here it is, the original Furnace Gold, just have to go away and redo all those variations now 😃
Measure, weigh, cut, splice - outside for a cast
It's a great wee event this one and it is always good to catch up with everybody
Who is going this year?
Headed for Cairn William at Pitfichie and was rewarded with some great views.
Looking down on the river Don at Monymusk village.
Looking down on Monymusk/Place of Tilliefoure water(i think)
Duncan
A few minor obstacles walking through paradise wood and the walk up through the forest at beat 2 is ok. But a lot of trees down on the upper half. Looks like they are getting ready for forestry operations. Some prep work has taken place. A big job.
The river bank looks clear enough for fishing,
Picked the Furnace Yellow this time and created a "Bob Fly" version.
Looks good to me
Like this one and it's got a nice kinda Greenwell / Coo Dung vibe going on, certainly something I plan to adapt further.

Love playing about with flies and hope it helps inspire others to do the same.
Heres them all.
All the best for 2024 - fingers crossed for a good season
I've had this in the armoury for years, so long I can't even remember where I first saw it and can't find original dressing reference anywhere.
Assume it came from a magazine article and would love to credit originator.
Anyway a handy wet fly and, of course, I've a few variations

Sad news ..... but very much a sign of the times!

Something different for the holidays. I was trying to articulate something and it came out like this
Its early evening, moody and warm,
Low level martins are dodging and darting.
Im Watching,
Waiting,
For the hatch to be starting.
Lost in my wonder, a season of thoughts,
Ephemeral dancers sparkle with light.
A dimple,
Intriguing.
Im early tonight.
The weathers relaxing,
Rendered by thunder,
A dimple,
Again.
Cant help but wonder.
Fly soup at the bank,
Just drifting, a quiver,
A dimple,
Another,
A tail splits the river.
The water is nervous,
Charged up with life.
Prone Spinners,
Trapped duns,
Small sedges are rife.
Am I missing a trick,
Big fish need to feed,
Do they just wait?
Perhaps,
Soups what they need.
After watching
Not surprised to see ice on the lochs, the last few mornings have certainly been a tad nippy.

This was the Spey valley from one of the many back road diversions today!
No sign of the river, it was like a loch, serious amounts of flood water.
I was asked a couple of unexpected questions this week by a work colleague which I thought were worth sharing.
On the face of it, both questions seem quite innocuous too, that was until I tried to answer them.
The first was 'how many different species have you caught on the fly ' with the follow up question ' and which was your favourite '
The answer to both was - I genuinely don't know I shared this with some friends and in part the reason why I found them so hard to answer is that every fish is memorable, every day a treasure, every trip a journey into the unknown. I'll only know the answers when I hang my rods up for good, which I hope is many, many seasons from now.
Not sure that 'magazine' really does it justice, possibly better described as a collection of fly fishing short stories in a quality A4 book format?
However you describe Fly Culture, editor Pete Tyjas deserves a pat on the back ...... I think that's five years now and I've really enjoyed reading it.
This was my 3rd or 4th version of the site, I think the previous one had a speckled background and things like a visitor counter, 'top site' badge and a guest book - remember those?
This month's ( Autumn ) edition of Trout & Salmon magazine.
15 Four Weight Lines Tested - Which Trout Line For Rivers?
In an attempt to try and keep the forum going, let’s recreate a thread from the past. It’ll be interesting to see how tastes have changed (or not) over the intervening 15 years…
So the question is:-
“What is your favourite rod of all time?”
To make life a little easier, let’s have a #5 or heavier, and a #4 or lighter option.
My choices would be:
#5 - Winston Boron B2X (made by Sandy)
#4 - Epic Packlight 476 Glass (made by Sandy)
