Rivers & Lochs / Re: My neck of the woods currently
« Last post by Graham Nicol on 17/10/2024 at 07:50 »
It was my last day of the trout season and so ambitiously tried a small carrier on the upper Itchen. Bit of a shock to find bankside vegetation had grown so profusely that the river had narrowed so much that the banks were almost touching. It also meant that it was a lot deeper than normal and it can be quite a surprise when wading in clear water thinking it is shallow when actually it isn't. A few pale wateries about but nothing on the surface and so resorted to micro nymphs and managed to fool a few. Thank goodness it wasn't windy for accurate casting was required. Good end to the season and now my focus is on grayling.

Tackle Talk / Re: Favoured Leader Set Ups?
« Last post by Allan Liddle on 16/10/2024 at 14:51 »
My set up pretty much identical to Sandy with tapered leader set to fixed length by tippet ring.  Then i use whatever length i want to the fly, or (on lochs) to my dropper. (Often lochs i use two flies, occasionally a team of three, but always off the fixed tippet ring.
But if fishing Euro Nymph then it's straight nylon off the fly line all the way through as the weighted nymphs turn it over, or if out in the salt the same, straight floro all the way through as the bigger flies turn it over.

Always liked to keep everything simple. *smiley-grin*

Nice fish Sandy. Rivers were hard for me towards season end.
Not too shabby in terms of numbers but don't think i had a fish over a pound and a half.

I subscribe to Fly Culture , T & S and Fly Fishing and Fly Tying - A combination of all 3 monthly would be great - but there again we are all individuals so different subjects interest different people.
